The
TOUCHSCREEN is an inexpensive, rugged and simple computer peripheral
device designed for use as a ‘viewer’ for audio/tactile
materials. Most simply, it consists of an off-the-shelf computer
touch screen connected to a PC via a USB cable. A simple clamp
design allows a user with limited manual dexterity to hold a selected
tactile graphic sheet motionless in place against the touch-sensitive
surface.
When a user presses points on a tactile sheet that
is placed on the TOUCHSCREEN, his or her finger pressure is transmitted
and the TOUCHSCREEN communicates the X an Y coordinates to the
computer. By comparing the position of each pick against the program’s
hotspots, the computer is able to provide identifying audio feedback
to the user, as a confirmation and elaboration of the information
supplied through touching. By this means, complicated tactile
figures can be made comprehensible.
Through the use of multimedia authoring tools such
as Macromedia Director, Talking Tactile Tablet* and the T3** softwares,
a range of sophisticated interactive software titles can be used.
